Bertha (Bruchel Kupferschmidt) Cooper Rosen

Bertha (Bruchel Kupferschmidt) Cooper was born on March 20, 1876 in Podolsk, Russia to Jacob Kupferschmidt (age 46) and Belle Pilchik (age 23). She had one older brother, Samuel and several younger siblings (Hyman 1879, Toby 1880, Minnie 1888, Lena 1889 and Gussie 1895).

Frank ( Froim Besrozum) Rosen

Frank Rosen was born on October 20, 1871 in Niemerow, Russia (which is now part of Ukraine). His father was Moshko Besrozum born around 1827. We don’t know anything about his mother. He had an older sister, Rachel Leah Rosen who was born around 1860. His brothers included Abraham born 1864, Rubin 1866, Isak 1883 and Beryl.

Nemirov was the center of Breslov Hasidism during the 19th century.

Frank and Bertha

Frank and Bertha were married in Russia in 1891. Their first child, Haskel was born on March 7, 1894. Adel (Udel) was born on July 4, 1898 and Ana Ethel on September 15, 1901. Maurice was born on March 30, 1903. Frank came to the United States in May of 1904 to try to establish himself prior to moving his family here. His older sister’s husband, Abraham Melnick had arrived the year before. His younger brother Rubin (Ruwen) Besrozum arrived in January of 1905 followed by his sister Ruchel the following month with her 3 youngest children.

Bertha came to America in 1905 with her parents, her 3 siblings Gisse (Gussie), Leie (Lena), Malkie (Minnie) and her children Udele (Adele), Ettel (Ethel) and Frank’s brother, Itsak Besrozum.

As you can see from the manifest, Frank Besrozum was already residing with the Krawitsky family at 302 E 52nd Street. The family initially moved in with one of Bertha’s relatives on a farm in Storrs. This did not work out and Frank took the family to Willimantic.

Alice was born November 16, 1906, Molly (Minnie) was born in January 9, 1910, Ruth was born on May 3, 1913.

Frank Rosen passed away on July 14, 1936 at age 64. Bertha passed away on July 22, 1962 at age 86.
