Velvel Warshall was born in Russia on April 25, 1874. His father was said to be Yitgal Moshe Varshal born around 1850. Roche Mirsky was born in Russia on April 1, 1881. Roche and Velvel married while still in Russia. They had their first child, Samuel (Shmuel) Marshall on December 25, 1902.
“Welwel” Warschal began his journey to America on February 6, 1904 on the German steam ship, SS Patricia, sailing out of Hamburg. He was listed as a 29 year old married tailor who already had an uncle in New York.
Welwel Warschal arrived in New York on February 21, 1906. He settle in New Britain, CT. He eventually sent money back to Russia for his wife and son to join him
Roche Warschal came to America with their 3 year old son, Schmuel on the SS. Potsdam arriving on July 23, 1906.
Family folklore was that William’s name was changed from Varshal to Marshall by an immigration agent at Ellis Island. The manifest for Roche and Schmuel clearly state that they were coming to America to Join W. Warshal who lived at 20 Willow Street, New Britain, CT. (thus his name was not yet Americanized).
Their daughters Goldie was born on Sept 22, 1907 and Tillie on February 10, 1910. By the time the 1910 census was done their names were Americanized and it was the beginning of the Marshall family in America.
Morris was born on August 12, 1912 and Harry on June 10, 1915.
Nathan was born on August 16, 1920, George on December 3, 1922 and Edith January 29, 1926.
William and Rose when he was a child
William passed away on January 8, 1947 at age 72. Rose passed away on December 29, 1971 at age 90.
